Who We Are

Founded in 1969, SOLVE’s mission is to bring Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a legacy of stewardship. SOLVE restores and preserves Oregon’s environment by mobilizing the power of volunteers and partners with the generosity of donors. Across the state, it brings diverse communities together to improve the health and safety of Oregon's neighborhoods and natural areas including its coast, rivers, parks, and forests.

What We Do

SOLVE runs numerous programs to achieve its mission:

  • Project Oregon: As with all SOLVE programs, Project Oregon supports projects that include litter abatement, the removal of invasive plant species, the planting of native plants, and/or the maintenance of such plantings.
  • Detrash Portland: This initiative connects like-minded volunteers who want to tackle the issue of litter in Portland. Each week, SOLVE supports events throughout the city, provide cleanup supplies, safety information, and disposal assistance for anyone who would like to improve their neighborhood through the simple act of cleaning up.
  • Pick It Up, Portland! During this two-day, city wide litter cleanup event thousands of volunteers remove over 14,000 pounds of trash from business fronts, parks, and neighborhoods at 26 projects throughout the Rose City.
  • Oregon Spring Cleanup: This event has its roots in the Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup (created in 1986) and SOLVE IT for Earth Day (started in 1990). SOLVE hopes the Oregon Spring Cleanup will become a family tradition to join with other Oregonians in taking care of our state.
  • Beach & Riverside Cleanup: SOLVE’s Beach & Riverside Cleanup has long been a statewide movement to protect and improve Oregon’s watersheds. Cleanups occur along waterways across the state and on nearly every mile of the Oregon Coast. Since the start of the Beach & Riverside Cleanup, over 1.7 million pounds of litter have been removed by over 130,000 volunteers.
  • Oregon Adopt-A-Beach: SOLVE is currently supporting groups, families or individuals who would like to adopt their favorite stretch of beach anywhere on the coast of Oregon. There are dozens of beaches available. All participants are required to clean their adopted stretch of coastal beach at least three times a year, for two years, and report their results back to SOLVE.
  • Oregon Adopt-A-River: This partnership between SOLVE and the Oregon State Marine Board supports individuals and organizations in cleaning and preserving their favorite stretch of waterway (river, lake, or stream), anywhere in the state of Oregon. Participants can improve their local waterway by picking up trash, removing non-native invasive plants, or both! The commitment is for 2 years doing at least 2 cleanups or invasive plant removal events per year.
