The ASYMCA San Diego combats this issue of food insecurity in the community we serve. This program helps military families worry less about food and focus on mission readiness.
Volunteers will unload containers; unpack pallets; sort; and pack grocery items in bags for more than 200 families. It is a drive thru event where volunteers will place the packed grocery items in the trunk of the participants cars. The food being distributed incudes, dry goods, frozen goods and fresh produce. Families begin driving through the line at 9:30 a.m. and the event typically wraps up by 12:00 p.m.
They ask all volunteers to park in front of the ASYMCA office. The distribution is held at the far end of the parking lot, next to the chapel.
Volunteers should wear comfortable closed toe shoes and dress weather appropriately as this event happens rain or shine. Hats, sunscreen, sunglasses are recommended. There will be standing, bending and lifting of items that can weigh between to 15 lbs. – 25 lbs.
They will have shade, water and snacks for all volunteers to enjoy throughout the day.
