Who We Are
MISSION
To work collaboratively with others to aid our homeless brothers and sisters by offering a continuum of services including emergency shelter and access to supportive housing and comprehensive social services.
VISION
Joseph's House is committed to a Camden where no neighbor sleeps outside, even for one night; where those brought down by poverty, addiction or mental illness find in Joseph's House a place of friendship, motivated by Scripture and Catholic Social Teaching, offering hope and practical help.
What We Do
NIGHT SERVICES
Our overnight shelter is a temporary home to 75 men and women experiencing homelessness - at JHOC, we call them guests.
The overnight shelter has two goals:
- To provide a safe, warm, hospitable shelter for those experiencing homelessness;
- To connect our guests with area social services providers who can offer more permanent solutions to homelessness.
Our doors open each night at 8:15 pm and we close each morning at 7:30 am. All of our beds are reserved during the day and we are unable to serve walk-ins.
DAY SERVICES
Most people experiencing homelessness need the same basic tools to get back on a path to housing: an ID (birth certificate, social security card or driver’s license) and a job. To help them with this, the service navigators at Joseph’s House guide guests through working with these major organizations:
- The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission
- The Social Security Administration
- The Camden Unemployment Office
- Camden County Board of Social Services
- The Camden courts
Our staff facilitates on-line meetings and communications between guests and our partner agencies.
The Joseph’s House team also supports guests’ health needs. For example, Project Hope, Rutgers Behavioral Health, and other agencies provided tele-health appointments and support groups for Joseph's House guests.
In 2020, Joseph’s House supported the Camden community with COVID testing and vaccinations through the support of these partner agencies:
- Virtua Hospital
- The Camden County Health Department
- The NJ Department of Health
- Project HOPE
